About Me:

Dr. Cheryl Van Den Handel is Associate Professor of Political Science at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Ok., capital of the Cherokee Nation. She began her education in politics in Northern California from 1993-1997. Her degrees include a B.A. in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, a Master in International Studies and a Ph.D. in Comparative & World Politics from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA.  She has been teaching Political Science at NSU for 10 years, in the areas of Comparative Politics, International Relations, Regional Politics, topics in Global Studies, and Women & Gender Studies. Her current research projects are two co-authored papers, “Attitudes on Women in Politics in Southeast Asian Countries”, and “The Rise of the Women’s Movement in Oklahoma.” The focus of her research is on the incentive structures of women participating in politics, and the impediments to women participating in politics, in multiple regions.
She has expertise in Middle East Politics developed from graduate school forward.
